Closures/Multiples Everyday we are confronted by thousands of machine made products and images. Some are designed to appeal to our senses or emotions; others are purely utilitarian. In either case, in our daily lives we are rarely cognitive of the physical, esthetic or social consequence or meaning of all the stimuli we are presented with. We accept the products as multiples with no unique characteristics. It is when these products are discarded and can no longer be used for their intended purpose that they acquire unique characteristics. My fascination has been with the transformation from mass produced multiples (to which we assign value: "products") to unique objects (which are assigned no value: "garbage"). This collection of photographs of "closures" represents some of my work investigating transformation and reclamation in our everyday lives. 11/28/00 |
