Artist's Statement

The paintings that I make appear as monochromatic fields from a distance and grow into layered webs as the viewer draws near. Each brush stroke is an expression of a moment; the finished work is a record of thousands of accumulated moments in the studio.

The repeated mark, whether it takes the form of a painted line, a pin hole or a droplet of paint, must be understood in the context of all of the other marks within the piece. To see one as independent of the others is to understand any one choice in your life without considering what came before and what happened after.

By layering fields of marks that are made on transparent vellum or monofilament, I am able to deconstruct the painting process. The marks exist on separate tiers which can be shifted during the construction of the composition; when the painting is complete these tiers are seen simultaneously through each other and the depth that is perceived is not an illusion, but instead it is the reality of the layering within the piece.
