Artist's Statement

Have you ever stood near the edge of a dam looking over one shoulder at the water's expansive surface reflecting sunshine beside your feet; over the other shoulder looking down the cavernous slope into a trickle of a riverbed a mile below? This is the site where I gain most of my inspiration.

I continually return to the qualities of water, the uses of it and the metaphors of it. The simulated and real containment and leakage of water may reference the landscape as well as associations with wetness of the body. I search to create the moment of wetness and spillage, escape from a package, fluidity seeping out of constraint. I strive to evoke the feeling of escape and accident. Intentionally making leaks and flows that accidentally impose into the modern world of structural grids in dams, skyscrapers and sidewalks.

My current work has developed from issues of freedom, constraint, emergence, and sedimentation. The expression of free flow and containment is created primarily by using water, tempera pigment, clear containers (vinyl, tubing, glass) thread, manufactured items, as well as performance within these elements and photographic and video documentation of the process. The works exist in large scale, site specific public areas as well as in smaller interior installations, sculptures and drawings.
