Gallery History |
|
Provincetown has been an artists' mecca since the 1890s, boasting the likes of Charles Hawthorn, Hans Hoffman, Robert Motherwell and others. In 1918 Provincetown was declared the largest artists colony in the world. Many of the New York School Artists including Pollock, and Frankenthaller, as well as countless actors and writers have worked in Dune Shacks and Bayside studios, inspired by our famous light, enticing beaches, and sophisticated night life. The aray of galleries display a rich assortment of work by established and emerging artists. Provincetown Group
Gallery was originally formed as an artists cooperative in the
1960s. It was recreated as a private gallery in 1996 by
Laura Shabott, Blaine Bershad, Will Sherwood, Richard Saul, Junior
and Michael J. Williams. In 1998, under the directorship of Emma Ross
and Joanna Miller, and sole ownership by Blaine Bershad and Will Sherwood,
Provincetown Group Gallery, Inc. has expanded its vision to include
artists from across the nation. Internationally known Los Angeles
photographer Greg Gorman, Provincetown collage artist Tom Canney,
Boston area artists Sara Francis Egan, Maggie Simonelli, Ellen Sperling
and Stephanie Cramer are all new additions to our artist group for
1999. They join some of the top Provincetown favorites: Mischa Richter,
Timothy Basil Ering, Jen Bradley, Louis Kozma, Sacha Richter, Aris
Logothetis, D. Edwards and Sky Power. The artists in our gallery
represent three generations; from Mischa Richters hard-edge,
work to D. Edwards and Tim Erings conceptual, found-object
constructions. |
